[Cell] Exploring the Implications of iPS Cell Research for Society: Discussion Resulting from an International Stem Cell Conference Workshop

Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) Adj. Assoc. Prof. Kazuto Kato, concurrently associate professor at the university's Institute for Research in Humanities as well as the Graduate School of Biostudies, has coauthored a commentary outlining the various ethical, legal, and social issues that surround the relatively new field of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells.

Dr. Kato described the paper at a news conference at Kyoto University, coinciding with the report's publication in today's issue of the journal Cell.

Including contributions from collaborators such as Azim Surani (Professor at the University of Cambridge and Visiting Professor of the iCeMS), Amy Zarzeczny (Research Associate at the University of Alberta), and Timothy Caulfield (Professor at the University of Alberta), the paper summarizes discussion that took place at a workshop associated with the 2009 annual meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR).

The workshop, held in conjunction with the July ISSCR conference in Barcelona, gathered 17 experts in the fields of stem cell research, bioethics, law, and political science, representing Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Japan. Discussion focused on issues of privacy, consent (and its withdrawal), reach-through rights, intellectual property challenges, ethical use, and the clinical translation of iPS cells.
