Prof. Nakatsuji, Assoc. Prof. Sengoku Speak at Multi-Sector Business Seminar

On February 28, nonprofit corporation Kyoto SMI held a multi-sector seminar at Kyoto University's Tokyo Office in Shinagawa, featuring presenations by Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) director Prof. Norio Nakatsuji, and iCeMS Assoc. Prof. and Kyoto SMI board member Shintaro Sengoku. The seminar, aiming to cross boundaries between academia, industry, and the public sector, attracted around 90 participants, including government officials and media representatives.

Other speakers included Kyoto SMI Chief Director Tsuneo Nakahara, Honorary Chairman of the Engineering Academy of Japan and former Vice President of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., ReproCELL Inc. CEO Chikafumi Yokoyama, Sumitomo Bakelite S-BIO Business Division Marketing Director Hisao Nakanishi, Edinburgh BioQuarter Commercialisation Director Mike Capaldi, and Cabinet Secretariat Medical Innovation Promotion Officer Jun Watanabe, who delivered presentations examining anticipated applications of human stem cells and related domestic technologies in the context of global business opportunities.

Additionally, Deputy Director of the Research Center for Science Systems, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Program Director of the World Premier International Research Center (WPI) Initiative Toshio Kuroki delivered remarks about the international and cross-disciplinary promise of the WPI program.

During the panel discussion at the end of the seminar, the participants engaged with the audience in a lively discussion covering quality control of iPS cells, latest research developments in Scotland, and standardization practices in the business of stem cells.
