Professor John Heuser

Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) Professor John Heuser, was awarded the Extenal LinkWilson Medal by the American Society of Cell Biology (ASCB) for his contributions to understanding how cells maintain their shape. Through electron microscopy, Heuser developed a "quick-freeze/deep-etch" method to visualize the intricate details of the cell's cytoskeleton, which is responsible for maintaining the cell's overall structure.

According to Joseph Gall, the chairman of the selection committee for the award, the Wilson Medal "is the highest award given by the ASCB and it means a great deal to ASCB members, who recognize that our science is both collaborative and shaped by exceptional individuals."

In addition to Heuser, William Brinkley of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and Peter Satir of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City were also chosen to receive the Wilson Medal.

The awards ceremony will be held during the ASCB/IFCB Meeting in Philadelphia in early December 2014.
