96th iCeMS Seminar: Prof. Theo Frans Meert

At present in our society, there is a huge unmet medical need in various CNS disorders, with patients suffering from psychiatric and neurological disorders, as well as various manifestations of chronic pain. On top of that, there is an increasing pressure on pharmaceutical companies due to growing costs of drug development and increasing failure rates in late development. As a consequence and despite rapidly evolving scientific knowledge in areas such as schizophrenia, depression, chronic pain, Alzheimer and other neurodegenerative disorders, various pharmaceutical companies withdraw from the CNS area.

In order to overcome these issues, novel models of collaboration between industry and the public private sector needs to be installed.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the pharma sector of J&J, remains committed to foster the development of transformational and holistic treatment options for patients suffering from CNS disorders. To do so, the NS team is expanding its internal capabilities with external partnerships worldwide in drug discovery, biomarkers/diagnostics and clinical testing based on scientific innovation/merits of the different parties.

Besides some evolutions in science and technologies allowing for breakthrough developments, models of partnership, including some examples of precompetitive consortia and interactions with academia will be discussed. Some attention is also given to our support of the One Mind for Research initiative, a worldwide program to foster neuroscience research, education, and awareness-building programs.
