Research Interest

Electron microscopy of cells and molecules

What I like about my science

It keeps me busy, and beats flipping burgers at McDonald's or selling used cars.

Researcher Q & A

Where are you from?

United States of America

Why did you become a researcher?

For as long as I can remember, been amazed by the goings-on in nature around me (and inside me) and wanting to understand how it all worked....Always wanted to take everything apart and see inside it, just to 'get' it....

What is your favorite experiment, theory, device, reagent, lab equipment? Why do you like it?

Nothing beats the electron microscope for "seeing it like it is"…
It's the best tool ever, for seeing inside things and figuring out how they work.

What is your hobby?

I'm hooked on classical European music, go to concerts all the time, and have even driven all of my children to become professional musicians, rather than scientists.

As a dad, I've always 'been there' for my kids....but always from behind a camera, recording every step of their lives!

This fun 3D-EM of mine has been used everywhere, from my Department’s 100th-year celebration in the USA years ago, to iCeMS's big Heidelberg-Kyoto Joint Symposium "Crossing Boundaries: Stem Cells, Materials, and Mesoscopic Sciences”
