第128回iCeMSセミナー:合田圭介教授

Abstract: Optical imaging is a ubiquitous tool for a diverse range of applications in scientific research, industry, and medical practice. Unfortunately, conventional cameras such as CCD and CMOS image sensors cannot capture fast dynamical processes with high sensitivity at high speed. This is due in part to the technological limitation that it takes time to read out data from the sensor array. Also, there is the fundamental trade-off between sensitivity and speed - at high frame rates, fewer photons are collected during each frame. In this talk, I will introduce a new type of optical imaging technology that overcomes these limitations and offers at least 1,000 times higher shutter speed and frame rate than CCD and CMOS cameras. I will discuss the principle of this ultrafast optical imaging technology and its utility to biomedical applications such as cancer diagnosis and flow cytometry.

Biography: Keisuke Goda is currently a Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the development of innovative measurement technologies for a diverse range of scientific, industrial, and biomedical applications. His goal in teaching is to educate and produce global leaders who will shape the 21st century science, industry, and medicine. He obtained a B.S. degree summa cum laude from UC Berkeley in 2001 and a Ph.D. degree from MIT in 2007, both in physics. In 2007, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at UCLA as a postdoctoral researcher (later as a program manager) to develop imaging technologies. In 2011, he also joined the Department of Bioengineering to develop diagnostic technologies. In 2012, he joined the School of Science at the University of Tokyo as a Professor of Physical Chemistry. He also initiated and currently chairs the Todai - UCLA Joint Research Institute along with other faculty at UCLA. He was awarded the UCLA Chancellor's Award for Postdoctoral Research in 2010 and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface in 2011 to name a few. He served as Co-Chair of Los Angeles Chapter of IEEE Photonics Society from 2007 to 2011. He was also Founding Chair of Southern California Japanese Scholars Forum. He holds more than 100 publications and 3 pending patents. His work has been featured in various media agencies including BBC, Wired Magazine, TIME Magazine, Scientific American, and Discover Magazine.
