April 30, 2015
On April 20, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand and a Thai delegation consisting of over fifty government officials and industry leaders paid a visit to Kyoto University's Institute for Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS). Kyoto University President Juichi Yamagiwa, Vice Presidents, iCeMS faculty members and administrative staff greeted Her Royal Highness at the Main Building.
President Yamagiwa made a welcome speech to the Princess, in which he highlighted bright researchers from Thailand, followed by his hopes for Kyoto University to strengthen academic partnership with Thailand. Vice President Nagahiro Minato gave an executive summary of scientific research conducted at the university.
During the coffee break on the second floor lounge, Princess Sirindhorn conversed with Director Susumu Kitagawa, Deputy Director Ryoichiro Kageyama, and other iCeMS members on potentially making iCeMS a global hub for industry, government and academia collaboration.
Scientific presentations were given by three iCeMS faculty members, including Director Kitagawa on iCeMS and porous materials, Deputy Director Kageyama's talk on brain rejuvenation using stem cells, and Associate Professor Easan Sivaniah's talk on energy and environmental solutions through polymer membranes.
Professor Yoshie Harada, Director of Center for Meso-Bio Single-Molecule Imaging (CeMI), organized a lab tour for the delegation at the iCeMS Research Building, where junior researchers explained their research using state-of-the-art equipment.
To show her appreciation, the Princess presented gifts imprinted with her hand-drawn illustrations to speakers, researchers, and administrative staff who helped make the visit a success.
