On August 24, Dr Ingo Höllein, Counsellor for Science and Technology at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Tokyo and Mr Johannes Schweizer, Senior Officer for Economic Affairs at the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Osaka-Kobe paid a visit to Kyoto University's Institute for Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS). Dr Höllein had been wishing to visit one of Kyoto University’s cutting edge research institutes, and iCeMS was chosen as it is highly acclaimed for its world top level research.

Dr Höllein first had a meeting with iCeMS Director Susumu Kitagawa and Deputy Director Ryoichiro Kageyama, where they explained iCeMS' integrative research from a chemist’s and a cell-biologist’s points of view respectively. They also explained iCeMS’ mission to play an active role as an international research institute to conduct fundamental researches that would lead to industrial, environmental and healthcare innovations.

Associate Professor Shuhei Furukawa organized a lab tour around the iCeMS Research Building, where young researchers gave briefings on their own research. Dr Höllein asked many questions to the researchers and enjoyed lively conversations.

“iCeMS provides a truly international environment in which their researchers can interact without stress,” said Dr Höllein. “It is also amazing that iCeMS researchers are working together across the boundaries of study fields, and successfully generating great outcomes by integrating material science and cell biology. And they implement not only fundamental research but also its application—which is quite unique.”
