On October 19, Peking University President Lin Jianhua paid a visit to Kyoto University’s Institute for Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS). Peking University is one of the universities that have top class reputations in the world, on both education and research.

Lin had been wishing to visit iCeMS as one of world-top level research institutes in Japan where interdisciplinary research between chemistry and cell biology has been vigorously pursued.

Program-Specific Associate Professor Dan Ohtan Wang organized a laboratory tour around iCeMS Research Building. Lin first visited the open offices which are designed without partitions between research groups, then the common laboratories. He observed iCeMS researchers communicating and conducting researches together beyond the differences of their study fields.

Wang also delivered a brief presentation about her research on Neurosciences and RNA Biology. After the presentation, Lin told Wang that there was a researcher in Peking University who worked on the same field with Wang, advising Wang to contact the researcher to seek for a possibility of collaboration.

“iCeMS is a good example of a research institute dedicated to interdisciplinary fields. It is a pressing matter for us to acquire world-top brains from different study fields and implement a research environment where cross-disciplinary researches can more easily be facilitated.” Said Lin. “I was able to learn a lot and obtain some tips to this end by visiting iCeMS.”
