Leibniz Prize recipient Prof. Frank Bradke of German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) visits iCeMS
On January 23, Prof Frank Bradke of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) visited Kyoto University’s Institute for Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS). Prof Bradke is a German specialist in Neuroregeneration and the awardee of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize 2016. The Leibniz Prize is known as the most prestigious scientific award in Germany and has been awarded annually to scientists who have prominently excelled in their researches since its foundation in 1985.
His visit was based on his keen interest in iCeMS, one of the world-leading research institutes of Kyoto University. Prof Bradke strongly wished to visit iCeMS during his stay in Japan as he got invited to speak at the Leibniz Lecture organized by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). His request was conveyed to iCeMS by the DFG Office Japan.
Prof Bradke was welcomed by iCeMS Deputy Director Ryoichiro Kageyama and Prof Mineko Kengaku, and received explanations from them on iCeMS' cutting-edge neural cell biology researches utilizing its integrated researches between Chemistry and Cell Biology. They actively exchanged candid opinions about the ongoing projects from neurobiologists’ point of view as their research fields are very close to each other.
Prof Kengaku guided Prof Bradke through the iCeMS Research Building to show him the experiment equipment and explain her study of neurobiology. Prof Bradke interacted with many scientists throughout his stay at the Research Building.
Prof Bradke’s comment: “iCeMS is one of quite rare institutes which have successfully realized integrated researches between Chemistry and Biology. I was fascinated to see that iCeMS has achieved, in an ideal way, interdisciplinary approaches between those two academic disciplines in a very cooperative atmosphere among other field scientists.”
