Research Interest

Molecular Biology

By disclosing new functional aspects of ion channels (what they sense, which ionic species they conduct into and extrude from a cell?), we are trying to find out unprecedented or elusive functional aspects of cells (or a new type of cell) and organs. In particular, we are interested in how our body relies on these cells in sensing the availability of molecular oxygen O2 and production of energy, and thereby changes itself.

What I like about my science

To challenge canonical concepts. Our research papers are sometimes commented negatively by reviewers of the journal, "Read the textbook more carefully (then you will understand how wrong you are)," although we are exactly intending to revise what is written in a textbook.

Researcher Q & A

Where are you from?

Nagoya via Nagano

Why did you become a researcher?

Because I was not successful in some other things, which I liked more than performing research. Also, when I decided to change my occupation, my experiments became too exciting to be abandoned.

What is your favorite experiment, theory, device, reagent, lab equipment? Why do you like it?

-An experiment I like: column chromatography (because different substances are so beautifully separated in to multiple layers).
-Theory I like: Darwinism (because it sets our standard we should challenge).
-A device I like: tsGFP1 (because it first showed "physiological" heterogeneity of subcellular thermal dynamics).
-A reagent I like: Fura-2 (because it first clarified dynamics of messenger molecules in a live cell).
-A lab equipment I like: distiller (because it made many people happy).

What is your hobby?

Currently, my hobbies are sealed in my memory. But I still like to discuss with my family and friends about my fascination with movie scenes, for instance, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," "Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgment," and so on.
