iCeMS Announces Young Scientists' Colloquia & Happy Hour Series

April 6, 2012

Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) is pleased to announce the launch of a new, cross-disciplinary series of informal scientific talks and social gatherings. Scheduled to take place late on Friday afternoons, the Young Scientists' Colloquia & Happy Hours are open to all scientists interested in attending a casual forum for exchanging ideas and getting to know other researchers.

The inaugural colloquium will take place beginning at 16:30 on Friday, April 13, featuring iCeMS Kyoto Fellow Peter Carlton, together with Extenal LinkTadashi Uemura, professor of the Graduate School of Biostudies. The second event will be held on Friday the 27th, with talks by iCeMS Asst. Prof. Kaoru Sugimura and Extenal LinkTaiji Adachi, professor of biomechanics at the university's Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences. Flyers and details of these and other upcoming colloquia can be found on the Extenal LinkiCeMS' Facebook page. (No login required.) No registration is necessary to attend. The colloquium on the 13th will be conducted in English, and on the 27th in Japanese.

The idea for the colloquia was born out of a series of informal Friday happy hours initiated by iCeMS Kyoto Fellows Peter Carlton, Ziya Kalay, and Franklin Kim, which have been taking place at the iCeMS for most of the past year. In keeping with the spirit of these informal get-togethers, each colloquium will be followed by an open happy hour with refreshments. Researchers from across the university are warmly welcomed to attend, take part in the discussion, meet other scientists, and help plant the seeds of future fruitful cross-disciplinary efforts.
