Science Communication

As of February 8, 2012

The Science Communication Group (SCG), led by Associate Professor Kazuto Kato, has been developing and evaluating the teaching program for researchers to enhance "science communication" skills, in a bid for better mutual relations among "researchers in different fields" and between "the scientific community and society."

Activities / Projects

iCeMS Café

Much like a Science Café -- also referred to as a Café Scientifique -- the "iCeMS Cafés" are a series of events that involve face-to-face conversations between an iCeMS principal investigator and colleagues over tea and coffee in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. They take place at a traditional Kyoto-style house or a café, and are open to everyone -- scientists as well as non-scientists are more than welcome.

iCeMS Crosstalk

A young researcher of the iCeMS interviews one of the iCeMS Principal Investigators (PIs) of his/her choice each time. What motivates the PIs? From which perspective do they pursue their studies? This series lets you hear some episodes, giving you a glimpse of the PIs' mindset toward research as well as their philosophy.

iCeMS-CiRA Classroom

Co-hosted by the iCeMS and the CiRA, this two-day hands-on ES and iPS cell research workshop is designed for high school students. In addition to informative lectures by iCeMS and CiRA researchers as well as ample opportunities for discussion, participants learn how to observe living cells using research-grade microscopes and get a taste of how real science is based on cumulative knowledge acquired over generations of experimentation and hypothesis testing.

iCeMS Connection

An iCeMS Connection is a program connecting you with science —and science with you. Games and "play" activities are prepared by scientists to reflect their actual research, and to pique your intellectual curiosity. You are encouraged to bounce your ideas, questions, and opinions off of the participating researchers.
