SUSTech Leadership Visits iCeMS

Discussing avenues for cooperation

On November 28, a delegation from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and Shenzhen Ocean University (SOU) Preparation Office in Shenzhen, China, visited iCeMS at Kyoto University. The delegation included Chair Professor Jian Lin, Director of the Advanced Institute for Ocean Research, a distinguished geophysicist, and Chair Professor Kyo Jo from the Department of Chemistry, a world leader in nanostructured materials for energy. SUSTech is recognized as one of China's most dynamic and rapidly ascending research institutions. The meeting was hosted by iCeMS Director Professor Motonari Uesugi, who provided an overview of iCeMS’ core mission in basic research and emphasized the strategic importance of recruiting talented students and researchers.

The conversation focused on areas of potential future cooperation and exchange. Professor Lin highlighted SUSTech’s ambitious plans, including the upcoming Shenzhen Ocean University in 2027, and discussed how Kyoto University's expertise in materials like Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) might align with critical marine applications. The two sides explored opportunities for researcher and student exchange, collaborating on research, and the potential for start-up collaborations with the support of the iCeMS Venture Studio, leveraging Shenzhen's status as a burgeoning innovation hub. The exchange strengthened mutual understanding and identified potential pathways for future research engagement.
