University of Melbourne Delegation Visits iCeMS

Explaining the features of a specialized research lab during the facility tour

On March 3, 2026, a delegation from the University of Melbourne, including Professor Michael Wesley (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Global, Culture and Engagement) and Mr. David Israel (Executive Director of Global Education Strategy), visited the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) at Kyoto University. The visit introduced iCeMS’ interdisciplinary research and served to explore avenues for future institutional collaboration.

During the meeting, participants discussed iCeMS’ operational strategies, including its Venture Studio for creating startups and its "Innovation Core" units, which partner with industry to co-develop research technologies. They also discussed the Kyoto University On-site Laboratory initiative, focusing on how these decentralized hubs are integrated into the broader research network.

The visit concluded with a tour of the iCeMS Analysis Center. This provided a direct look at the core research infrastructure and specialized instrumentation that support the institute's interdisciplinary work, establishing a basis for further dialogue on potential joint research initiatives.
