High school students from Japan and abroad attend the 2018 iCeMS Science Festival

The 2018 iCeMS Science Festival was held on November 9th and welcomed 25 high school students from Singapore, 25 from Kyoto, and 5 from Osaka.

The students travelled amongst the iCeMS scientists’ 12 booths as teams of 4 to 5 and enjoyed trying experiments, making observations, and interacting with the scientists. Researchers also conducted a contest between the teams, giving the students science questions based on their booth topic. The students participated eagerly in this contest and the winners were chosen based on the team that could provide eccentric and interesting answers rather than the correct scientific answer. At the close of the Festival, the iCeMS scientists showed a movie they had created for the students, entitled “Messages to Future Scientists and Technologists.” The participants left the all-English festival with a passion for science and positive outlook on the future of their involvement in science and technology.

The high school students commented, “It was incredibly fun,” “a truly unique experience,” “an amazing opportunity to learn about ongoing research work,” “I’m more motivated to learn,” “science is much more interesting than I thought,” and “I want to come again.”
