On August 20, President Mau-Chung Frank Chang of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan, and a delegation from NCTU and National Yang-Ming University (NYMU) visited iCeMS. The two universities form the core of Taiwan's academic research and education in both engineering and medicine. The internationally recognized, top-ranked universities plan to merge in the near future. [NCTU and NYMU have since formed National Yang Ming Chiao University (NYCU).]

The visit was made possible following the establishment of a Taiwan office at the National Biotech Research Park in Taiwan by Kyoto University’s iCeMS. The office was established with the aim of exchanging a broad range of views on collaborative research possibilities.

Director Susumu Kitagawa introduced iCeMS and explained the concept of the On-site Laboratories which iCeMS is developing worldwide. Following the introduction of research and other activities from Taiwan, there was a engaged discussion among the participants about future collaboration.

iCeMS Deputy Director Jun Suzuki commented, “I felt through the collaboration of iCeMS, which focuses on fundamental research, with NCTU, which specializes in practical applications in the field of engineering, and NYMU, which is strong in genome analysis, that there is potential to cultivate new fields.”
