Title: Confinement of polar molecules to enhance CO2 capture in MOFs
Abstract: An emerging CO2 capture technology is based on the preparation of hybrid adsorbent materials which can be synthesised by confining solvents inside porous solid supports. Our research group has been investigating the confinement of small amounts of polar molecules (H2O, EtOH, MeOH, i-PrOH, n-PrOH and DMF) within microporous MOFs that exhibit hydroxo functional groups (µ2 -OH). Results suggest that the hydroxo functional groups play a fundamental role in the confinement of polar molecules and these, can significantly enhance the CO2 uptake properties of MOFs-(µ2-OH).

Title: Tailoring the structure and properties of covalent organic frameworks by molecular design and solid state reactions
Abstract: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new class of crystalline porous materials composed of organic building blocks that are connected *via* covalent bonds in two or three dimensions. Synthetic control over the building blocks and by performing organic reactions with already formed COFs can influence all aspects of their structure and properties. COFs are generally obtained through reversible covalent bond forming reactions that allow the structure to crystallize. We developed a topo-tactic reaction that supplements this approach, in order to circumvent inherent limitations that are imbued by the prerequisite of reversibility.

Title: The beauty of metal-organic framework bulk chemistry combined with the fascinating world of nanoparticles
Abstract: In this talk, we describe our research aiming at the establishment of material chemistry guidelines to engineer smart metal-organic framework nanoparticles (MOF NPs) able to unlock their potential for applications in the field of life sciences. Special emphasis will be given to the synthesis and characterization of MOF NPs, the MOF NPs’ external surface functionalization and their biological assessment.

Title: New Advances in MOFs Photostories: From Ultrafast Studies to Possible Applications in Nanophotonics
Abstract: Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a class of crystalline porous compounds, have emerged as smart materials with a wide range of uses and applications. In this Lecture, I will talk about our results exploring the spectroscopic and photodynamical properties of a serie of Zr-based MOFs, and their possible uses in nanophotonics, photocatalysis and detection of explosive molecules.
