The Center for Integrated Data-Material Sciences (iDM) will become iCeMS newest on-site laboratory
On September 28, approval was given to establish the Center for Integrated Data-Material Sciences (iDM), an on-site laboratory in collaboration between iCeMS and the MacDiarmid Institute. The MacDiarmid Institute is composed of researchers from seven institutions across New Zealand, including five universities and aims to positively transform people’s lives and transition to a more sustainable economy. iDM will be located at Victoria University of Wellington and plans to launch within this fiscal year.
Dr Daniel Packwood and Prof Aiko Fukuzawa, who have led the initiative for iCeMS, say, “The Center for Integrated Data-Material Sciences will deepen the paradigm of data-driven materials science while aiming to establish a novel materials development process to accelerate the discovery of new materials for energy, environment and medicine.”
Kyoto University launched the On-site Laboratory Initiative in September 2018 as part of its strategy under the Ministry of Education’s Designated National University (DNU) program. The initiative enables academic departments and centers at Kyoto University to establish laboratories in collaboration with overseas partners, which are hosted on the campuses of either or both institutions and are locally managed.
The laboratories are tasked with conducting world-leading advanced research, developing quality human capital, recruiting talented international students, and expanding collaboration with industrial partners. Through these efforts, Kyoto University aims to strengthen its institutional infrastructure with a view to playing a greater role in international academia, and also further contribute to development and innovation in Japan.
Within Kyoto University eleven laboratories have already been established or approved for establishment through the On-site Laboratory Initiative, with the newly approved Center for Integrated Data-Material Sciences (iDM) bringing the total to twelve. iDM will be the sixth on-site laboratory operating in collaboration with iCeMS.
